Keeping Weeds Under Control During Florida's Rainy Season

Weeds in Southwest Florida don't take a break, but the rainy season is when they really take off. Warm soil and almost-daily rain mean a bed that looked clean last week can be full of sprouts this week.

The most effective defense is ground cover at the right depth. Thin mulch lets light reach the soil, and that's all weed seeds need. Keeping beds topped up at two to three inches of mulch, or a solid layer of stone, blocks most new growth before it starts.

Pull early and pull often. Young weeds come out roots and all; mature weeds drop seeds and spread. Regular visits that catch weeds while they're small are far less work than one big clean-out after they've taken over.

A thick, healthy lawn is its own weed control. Mowing at the right height lets turf shade out weed seedlings. Scalped, thin lawns leave space for weeds to move in.

Finally, know the local rules. Sarasota County and Manatee County both restrict fertilizers containing nitrogen and phosphorus during the summer rainy season to protect local waterways, so timing matters for any lawn treatment. We keep our work within those rules and build weed control into every recurring visit.
